Abstract

Writing is one of language skill that be the most difficult to be master. The first reason is writing has to be learnt, unlike speech, which is acquired in mother tongue as a child normal development. Speaking is familiar activity, but for many people writing is something they do rarely. They need to choosing vocabulary, arranging sentences, and organizing the sentences. The other reason is the absent of audiences. When we speak, we interact with addressee directly, But when we write we can not consult with the reader. It is difficult to know what information which the readers need, and it is so hard to know what to write.So, the researcher conclude that
writing is complex, and difficult to teach.Therefore, the teacher has to have an effective way to teach writing skill. And Charlie Chaplins Video as a Medium to teach Writing Narrative text is used in this research.
This research occurred with a statement of the problem that cover; Is Charlie Chaplins Video effective as a medium to teach writing narrative text at SMA Islam Parlaungan?
The research conducted in SMA Islam Parlaungan Sidoarjo. The students used bilingual language in their daily activity. But the students of this are lacks in writing skill especially writing Narrative text. The students of class XII were chosen as the sample of this study. This research use pra-experimental research. The design employee one group. For this research, the instruments used are pretest and posttest.
The result of this study shows that Charlie Chaplin video is effective as a medium to teach writing narrative text at SMA Islam Parlaungan Sidoarjo. It was seen from the comparison of the students score in pre-test and post-test. The differences of the score were proving of its effectiveness. In pre-test just 1 of 33 students were very good, and the rest was average and poor level. After teaching with Charlie Chaplins video as the medium, the post-test result said that 10 of 33 students were improved to the excellent level, 15 students were very good, 5 students were Average and 3 students were poor.
Finally, some recommendation for the English teacher and future researchers are made. The English teachers are suggested to use Charlie Chaplins video as medium to teach writing narrative text. And for the future researchers, they are expected to conduct the research on other skills.
