Abstract

This study is conducted based on the personal experience of the researcher while doing the internship program and the phenomena where many English teachers at nearby schools often instruct learners to do a task on either textbook or workbook without adequately explaining or supporting with a careful sequence of activities. That way of teaching put the learners into difficult condition since the demand of the task becomes high and learners themselves have different background knowledge and learning styles which needs to be directed to achieve the learning objectives. The student-teachers (ST) who got the chance to practice teaching in the real class have to face this challenge to provide some changes in learning English. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the task support provided by student-teachers at SMKN 1 Surabaya by assessing and justifying its appropriateness. The intended support is scaffolding as the guideline and help for learners to be balance with the demand of the task and automatically achieves the learning objectives. The observed classes were X grade of Accounting department. Both student-teachers taught that class in turn. The researcher uses three kinds of data as required in qualitative approach: natural-setting observation video, transcript of recorded interview, and document of lesson plan. The instruments used are checklist, interview guidelines, and framework to analyze the learning activity sequence written on the lesson plan. The result of this study shows that both student-teachers taught the material based on the textbook obeying the rule prevailed in SMKN 1 Surabaya and used mostly slideshow presentation and video as the media and aids to help teaching. The result of the analysis proves that the first student-teacher was able to provide the balance between task demand and task support in teaching both classes by providing comprehensible explanation about the material as the support for learning and designing a careful teaching steps to make learners keep being engaged to the learning so they understand the material deliberately, though. On the other hand, the second students-teacher was not able to provide the balance between task demand and task support because he was mostly textbook oriented. This second student-teacher clearly teaches the book with least modification on the way to present and transfer the material thus the learners were in less motivation for learning. For that reason, the first student-teacher is better than the second student-teachers in scaffolding their teaching steps organization based on the different response of the learners’ response towards these two student-teachers in the class and their achievement in completing the demand of the task.
