Abstract

Education is important aspect developing human resources in every country, the quality of the education on country would be measured through evaluation in every period. The evaluation is named National Exam (UN: Ujian Nasional) which is proposed to measure quality of education in every school in our country. Realize the importance of UN; many schools make strategy to overcome the students' problem in facing UN by conducting an Intensive English Learning Program (IELP). This program is aimed to give a channel for the students to enhance understanding of the English subject. Therefore, IELP is required to prepare the students more be ready in facing UN especially for English subject tested. Based on the reason above, the research problems are: ( 1) how is the implementation of Intensive English Learning Program (IELP) in SMP Muhammadiyah 17 plus Surabaya?, (2) What are the teaching techniques applied in Intensive Learning English Program to face National Exam in SMP Muhammmadiyah 17 plus Surabaya?, (3) And How is the students' readiness result for National Exam?. In conducting the study, the writer used descriptive quantitative and qualitative (mixed method). The subject of the study is 41 students of the ninth grade of SMP Muhammdiyah 17 plus Surabaya in the academic year of201 l/2012. The instruments used in collecting the data were observation, interview, and documentation. Then, the researcher analyzed the data descriptively. Based on the result of this study, it was revealed that the implementation of Intensive English Learning Program (IELP) was applied as Preparation to face National Exam. To implement the program intensively and successfully, the school need some strategies, Such as; designing the program, application the program, and evaluation. In the process of teaching - learning, the tutor applied some techniques that were varied enough, so students felt easily to understand the material taught. Then, the last finding about the students' readiness in facing UN analyzed trough data result of Try out test "School, mkks, diknas", and the result of statistic of data students' Try out value shown that some students have not been ready to face UN 2011/2012 maximally, especially for English subject tested.
