Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the existentialist aspect of a beautiful novel by J.R.R. Tolkien The Hobbit. With the problem formulation of the character that chooses his choice to be free and responsible for what he chooses. All the data are obtained entirely from the novel. The novel also describes the existentialism and the main character - Bilbo Baggins - a hobbit who has uniqueness because his character is unpredictable from other characters. As a hobbit, he should not have adventure but his life is changed after he chooses to have journey for adventure. The choice comes from Gandalf's suggestion, his wizard friend. This research is finding the identity as the relationship between the existence and freedom to choose. A person's life will be balanced when a person can be himself with his choices and responsibilities. The result of this research is Bilbo can decide the right choice and Bilbo must be responsible for his choice by being a brave person and becoming a burglar to fulfill what he chooses. From there, the essence of Bilbo Baggins is to realize his own life based on his own choice freely.
