Abstract

This is a Quasi- experimental research. It was conducted to address the frequently problems happened in the class. The students often make mistakes in applying the grammatical rules, when they speak English, especially in expressing past events. This is very complicated because there would be misunderstanding among the speakers when they communicate each other. Based on that problem, the writer wanted to solve it by applying Storytelling as a technique in teaching and learning process in the class. The idea to apply Storytelling comes from the rule that learning language needs repetition and practice. Inthe end of this research, the writer wanted to prove that Storytelling would improve the students' ability in expressing past events and how it worked. This research took place in SMA POMOSDA Nganjuk, one of bilingual private schools in Nganjuk. The subject was the student of XI IPS, which consists of two parallel classes. The first class was XI IPS 2 as the experiment group and the second was XI IPS 1 as the control group. The writer did quasi- experimental research because it was suitable with the subject of the study. The subject was divided in two groups based on the existing classes and it did not allow to have two groups randomly because of the policy of the school. The data were collected by observation and test to know whether the treatment processes run well based on the rules and to know the students' speaking ability before and after the Storytelling technique. The data from students' test were analyzed with T-test formula. The result of this research showed that there was a progress from pre-test to post-test inthe experimental group after following consecutive three treatments. This result also showed that there was a significant different between students who were taught with the conventional technique and storytelling technique. It means that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. In other words, Storytelling technique can improve the students' speaking ability.
