Abstract
Language is used for communication. One of the most important languages in the world is English. By using language people can communicate and express their feelings, ideas and thoughts to other people, in which the final purpose of this communication and interaction are getting comprehension and appreciation from others. Teaching speaking may become something difficult for English teachers. So the Teacher should find interesting materials to be used in the classroom. Teacher chooses interesting material like narrative text. This study was the students at the eleventh grades of MAN SURABAYA. The researcher was done to find out the answer of the two research question. State by the researcher in this thesis: (1) how narrative text is implemented as discussion material in speaking class to improve the students' speaking ability in MAN SURABAYA? (2) How are the students' responses after narrative text used as discussion material in speaking class? The researcher uses descriptive qualitative design to obtain information concerning the students speaking ability. The data in this study is from the activity of the students who follows the teacher interaction that uses "LKS". Research uses an observation checklist, questionnaire, and field notes. The result for the study, the responses of the students when narrative text applied to discussion were good. And the students score speaking can improve when narrative text applied to discussion. The students speaking competence can improve in every meeting.
