Abstract

Generally, we will find some aspects and skills that sustain English language in teaching and learning process. In order to gather those, we need something that drive us to reach that purpose. It's motivation. Ifasked to identify the most powerful influence on learning, motivation would probably be high on most teachers' list. Many kinds of motivation strategies that can be applied by teacher in the class, such as giving rewards (extrinsic motivation). Students who have low intrinsic motivatioµ can be helped by rewarding as extrinsic motivation. Because of those reasons, the writer is interested to analyze giving rewards by teacher that can help to motivate students in learning English. Thus, this study is aimed to analyze giving rewards as strategy to motivate students inlearning English. Related to the purpose above, the writer used descriptive research. The subject of his study is the tenth grade of SMA Suryalaya Plus Suemenep. In collecting data, the writer observed by using observation checklist that observe the teaching and learning process that occurred in classroom, after doing observation, the writer given questionnaire to students in order to know their responses toward giving rewards by teacher, the last, the writer interview teacher and students to sustain her data. After analyzing the data, the writer can conclude that students in SMA Suryalaya have motivation in learning English, but not all students have really motivated by giving rewards by teacher because the teacher didn't vary the rewards particularly in verbal rewards. Mostly the teacher used verbal rewards such as good, very good, Ok good and social rewards such as applause, smile, and point a thumb upward to motivate students in learning English. From the result of questionnaire, most of students prefer to choose token rewards and social rewards to motivate them inlearning English. Finally, it is expected the teacher consider using token varying rewards especially inpositive praise (verbal rewards) to motivate students inlearning English.
