Abstract

Improving the student's writing achievement was very important for writing that is considered as one of the most difficult language skill. Since English is used as a foreign language, most students get difficulties in exploring their ideas, feeling and finding the appropriate words in English. This situation leads teachers to be more creative in motivating their students to write. Referring to this problem, teaching aids are needed in the teaching and learning process in order to make learning fun and everlastings. Here, such kinds of pictures are suitble in helping the students to get idea in writing. Pictures seem to be appropriate media for any text genres such as Descriptive text. Photos will attract students to pay more attention to the detailed of photos provided. Photos are a kind of individual picture. A collaborative action research was done to find out whether photos could improve the student's ability in writing Descriptive text. The research was conducted following cycles. There were three cycles, each of which comprised two meetings. During the research, the researcher acted as teacher and the real English teacher acted as observer who observed during the teaching and learning process. She also revised the lesson plan for each cycle. The instrument used in this research showed that the implementation of photos during the teaching and learning process succeed in reacting its goal. The result of observation checklist, students writing composition and questionnaire were quite satisfying. Moreover, the improving of students' scores in each cyde proved that photos could improve the students' ability in writing descriptive texts. In the first cycle, the students who got up to 66 were only 15 students so that the average scores were 50 %. It was far from the Minimwn Standard of Mastery which required there were at least 75 % of students got scores up to 66. Then, it increased into 63, 3% in the second cycle. There were 21 students who got scores more than 66. Finally, the student's scores showed great improvement in the last cycle. There were 25 students or 83, 3 % of the whole students who have already reached the Minimum Standard of Mastery.
