Abstract

As students who learn English as a Foreign Language (EFL), most of students in EFL countries including Indonesia are reported to have many difficulties in reading English texts. There are many reasons behind this problem, namely: students’ English vocabulary size, a lack of interest in reading, and a lack of creative media used by English teachers. Those problems lead the students to have such a poor comprehension towards reading English texts. Bulletin Board, as one of creative media, is known to improve students’ reading comprehension. This study was conducted to know the implementation of using Bulletin Board in learning reading comprehension of descriptive text to seventh graders at MTs Al-Ihsan Krian, Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia. Moreover, this study was also conducted to find out the types of Bulletin Board used by one of the English teachers at MTs Al-Ihsan Krian. 35 seventh graders from “A” class and an English teacher were carried out as the participants of the study. This study uses descriptive qualitative research. Observation checklists and field notes were used as the instruments to obtain the data during three class meetings. The findings show that the English teacher implemented the Bulletin Board well because she followed all the five steps of the implementation steps. The steps include motivation, socialization, information exchange, knowledge construction, and development. Surprisingly, all the three types of Bulletin Board defined by Jordan Brandi were also used by the English teacher. They are Display Board, Informational Board, and Interactive Board.
