Abstract

This thesis discusses student preferences on teacher’s written feedback in English descriptive writing at SMA Negeri 2 Sidoarjo. The student’ preference is important because it can avoid the mismatching between the teacher’s feedback given and the student preference on teacher’s feedback. The aims of this qualitative research answers the two research questions; 1) what are the types of feedback given by the teacher in English descriptive writing at SMA Negeri 2 Sidoarjo? 2) what are the students’ preferences on teacher written feedback in English descriptive writing at SMA Negeri 2 Sidoarjo? The data collected through content analysis and questionnaire highlight that 1) there are 4 types of teacher written feedback, praise, criticism, suggestion and corrective feedback. 2) the students’ preference on teacher written feedback shows that the students prefer to corrective feedback, it is followed by suggestion, praise and criticism. Besides that the feedback mostly used by the teacher is corrective feedback. This indicates that the major type of feedback given by the teacher is aligned with the students’ preferences.
