Abstract

This thesis tries to analyze a science fiction novel that is written by an American Author, Veronica Roth under title Divergent. This thesis tells about the young girl who preferred move to Dauntless than stay in her old faction. Tris moves to Dauntless because, in the aptitude test, Tris get information that she is qualified to be dauntless. But Tris does not know what obstacles that she will face in Dauntless. Here, the writer wants to analyze the main character effort to prove her existence in her new faction. The purpose of this thesis is to know the ways Tris proves her existence by the council and the citizens in Dauntless as her new faction, and the second is to know changing characteristic of Tris before and after she joins Dauntless. This thesis uses the descriptive method by using Karl Jaspers’ Existentialism as the main theory and New Criticism as the supporting theory. Those theories are to help the researcher finds Tris’ existence in her new faction and how the existence affects her personality. The result of the thesis is Tris can change to be better when she can face all of her limit in her life. In the story, Tris can pass all of Dauntless challenges and obstacles that given to Tris when she is in initiation. She forces herself to face her boundary situation that can make her become an unbeatable woman in her new faction, Dauntless.
