Abstract

This study is conducted to analyze the short story by Ursula K. Le Guin entitled The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas. The purpose to analyze this short story is to better understand the general theme and the literary device that is found in this short story and as a vehicle for the researcher to give his own opinion regarding the general theme and the true meaning of the ending of this short story. To conduct this study, the researcher takes the data from the Short Story "the Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" by Ursula K. Le Guin. The method of the research is the descriptive qualitative method applied by the researcher to analyse the study. The researcher uses the key principles of Wolfgang Iser's Reception Theory and New Criticism Theory such as the dynamism between the two poles of his reception theory, aesthetic and artistic. In this research, aesthetic means the short story itself while artistic means the text created by the researcher as the response.
The result of the study shows that the literary devices such as plot, setting, point of view, etc at the beginning are all connected to the general theme of Happiness. Although, in the latter part of the short story the ironic side of the short story began to appear. The study also shows that some of the parts of the short story can be interpreted differently according to the researcher's opinion. and that the ending of the short story was well-thought-out according to the researcher's opinion.
