Abstract
This thesis discussed associative meaning on the poster of three themes of education, environment, and health. The researcher used the theory of associative meaning by Geoffrey Leech. According to Leech, the associative meaning has five types. They are connotative meaning, stylistic meaning, affective meaning, reflected meaning, and collocative meaning. This study aims to describe the real meaning and images in the posters. This study also interpreted types of associative meaning and explained the function in each type of associative meaning to know the messages contained in the posters. Therefore, three research questions will answer by the researcher, such as; (1) what is the real meaning of the education, environment, and health posters are. (2) what are the associative meaning used in every poster of education, environment, and health. (3) what is the function of associative meaning used in the poster of education, environment, and health poster. This research applied a descriptive-qualitative method. From this method, the researcher described the real meaning and the images contained in the posters. Then, interpret the types of associative meaning and explain the function. Before, the researcher analyzed the data. The researcher collected the data, which has criteria for more than 50 repins. After collecting, the researcher underlining and coding the data. The data of this research is poster was taken from Pinterest. The result of this study, the researcher, found the real meaning in posters. Such as the sentence “The S’more you read. The S’more you know” is the more one is reading, the more one will know. Many things can get from reading, such as information, education, and increase knowledge. That word also contained the collocative meaning of the word "S' more." The function is to convey the word “S’ more,” which tends to occur in the environment with the word ‘more.’ Based on the context, the word “S’ more” is associated with another word ‘more’ to make the right phrase and make the meaning related to the context. All the types found in the poster. However, the types of connotative meanings mostly used in the poster because the meaning in the poster talking about the real world, which is associates the expression when someone heard it or used it.
