Abstract

This thesis discusses women’s language features used by Lara Jean in the movie To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. The researcher conducts the research with Lakoff’s theory. This research investigates the types and the functions of women’s language in the movie used by Lara Jean. There are two problems in this study. They are (1) what are women’s language features used by Lara Jean and what is the most dominant feature she used in the movie To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. (2) what are the functions of women’s language features and what is the most dominant function she used in the movie To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. The researcher used a descriptive-qualitative method because the data were analyzed and described in the form of words and sentences. The data were taken from Lara’s utterances. Then, the data were identified, analyzed and explained based on the types of women’s language features based on Lakoff’s theory (1975). Furthermore, the selected data were analyzed and explained the functions. The result of this study, the researcher not found all types of women’s language features used by Lara Jean in the movie To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. The researcher only found 9 types of women’s language features, they are lexical hedges or fillers, tag question, rising intonation, empty adjectives, intensifiers, hypercorrect grammar, superpolite forms, avoidance of strong swear words and emphatic stress. The most dominant women’s language features is lexical hedges or fillers with 48 lexical hedges or fillers from 172 Lara’s utterances. The functions of women’s language features are weakening and strengthening function. The most dominant function of women’s language features is weakening with 124 from 172 Lara’s utterances
