Abstract

Reading is a part of english skills which has an important role in learning a language. It is very usefull for the students to get the new information and the new vocabulary. But, most of the students still face the problems to get the general information from the whole reading text. This study aims to find the teachers’ procedure in teaching english using mind map to facilitate the students’ reading comprehension and to know the students’ respond toward the use of mind map in SMPIT Darul Fikri Sidoarjo. The data was obtained by using observation field note for the english teacher and questionnaires for the students in 8-C class. The observation field note was analyzed using descriptive qualitative and the students’ questionnaires was analyzed using SPSS 18 then write into descriptive qualitative result. This study shows that, there are some tachers’ procedure in using mind map for facilitating the students’ reading. Those are, 1) The teacher prepared the students to make seating arrangement in a group and introduced the material. 2) Teacher made a group discussion about the descriptive text. 3) The teacher discussed about the students’ vocabulary from the descriptive text. 4) Teacher asked the students to make mind map and continued with asking the students to present mind map. 5) The teacher gave the students an exercise about the descriptive text. 6) Teacher evaluated the study. From those activities, students have more positive response bacause learning using mind map help them to understand the reading text. In addition, students really enjoy the learning process using mind map, and their reading comprehension increase after the teacher facilitates the learning process using mind map. So that mind map has some benefits for the students in the learning process and impact on the students’ reading comprehension.
