Abstract

Active learning occurs when learners possess the learning process as the involvement in creating it, not just the information they acquire. The teacher has a role as a facilitator in the atmosphere of active learning. Students perform most of the work, use their minds creatively, study ideas well, work on troubleshooting issues, practice what they read, write questions about debatable issues, participate in description and explanation, and write assignments inside small working groups that solve problems and ask questions. This qualitative study aims to analyze the teachers’ strategies in stimulating students’ active learning in English at MAN Kota Mojokerto which used Bonwell and Eison Theory about active learning strategies. This study used interview to obtain the data with two English teachers at MAN Kota Mojokerto. The result of the study shows that there are four strategies used by the English teachers to stimulate students’ active learning in English. Those are questioning & discussion, visual based instruction, computer based instruction, and peer teaching strategies. The strategies above are out of ten common strategies suggested by Bonwell & Eison. Furthermore, those strategies are used because they are easy to be implemented, students can participate actively, they can be easy to understand the lesson, and the facilitations are available in the school.
