Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing men's and women's language features of the Aladdin (2019) movie's men and women characters. This research aimed to investigate the types of men's and women's language features uttered by men and women characters and the language function used in the utterance. In addition, this study proposed to improve the awareness of male language characteristics based on Coates's theory in 2004 and female language features based on Lakoff's theory in 1975. (1960). The researcher employed the qualitative descriptive approach in this analysis. The movie collected the results. The data were analyzed through classification, identification, and interpretation of men's and women's language and language function varieties. In this research, the researcher found that men characters used five features of men's language. There are 39 utterances of men characters in the movie, which are included in the monologue Playing the Expert. The most dominant feature used by men characters is monologue playing the expert. By monologue playing the expert, the men characters want to take it in turns to hold the floor and talk about the subject on which they are an expert. In women, symbols used eight features of women's language. There are 39 utterances of women characters in the movie, which are included in rising intonation. Women characters' most dominant traits are increasing intonation using rising intonation and women characters because women are an expressive being. There are no emphatic stress and precise color terms found in women characters' utterances. Besides, the researcher found five functions of language in men's and women's characters' statements. The total number of using language functions is 82 utterances. The language function primarily used by men and women characters is the emotive function and referential function. It indicates that the men's figure used the reference feature, so it wishes to clarify or illustrate the situation. The character of the movie's woman has used the emotional function to convey her feeling or emotion.
