Abstract

This study aims to analyze the tragic hero shown by Apollo in Rick Riordan’s The Trials of Apollo: The Hidden Oracle. This study focuses on two research questions: How are the characteristics of a tragic hero shown by Apollo, and how did Apollo escape from a tragic hero in The Trails of Apollo: The Hidden Oracle. A descriptive qualitative method is used in the study. Aristotle’s tragic hero theory is used in both research questions, supported by new criticism theory. This study shows that Apollo shows all five characteristics of a tragic hero: noble birth, Hamartia, Peripeteia, Anagnorisis, and catharsis. Then to escape from his destiny as a tragic hero, Apollo have to finish the quest to regain five oracles and defeat three Triumvirate emperor plus Apollo’s internal nemesis Python.
