Abstract

K-13 revised curriculum requires teachers to design the tasks that develop students' literacy skills. They need to improve students' abilities in processing information to implementing new curricula. In embedding the literacy skill, teachers need to design lesson plan that focus on intended skill. This research aimed to identify the student teachers ability in designing critical literacy lesson plan and the challenges that they may have when writing it. To explore the issue, this study collected the data from content analysis, interviews, and questionnaires on how they design critical literacy lesson plans. The findings indicated that the majority of student teachers included critical literacy activities in their lesson plans throughout several phases. The challenges they have in designing critical literacy lesson plan were defining objectives, determining materials, selecting assessment, choosing activity, and providing the instructions. This study highlights that student teachers should be able to design critical literacy lesson plan to promote literacy skills in the classroom.
