Abstract

This thesis aims to analyze the characterization of Blackburn, the factor that cause Blackburn to become a psychopath. In this thesis, the researcher poses two research questions: 1) how is Blackburn's characterization described in the novel. 2) What factors caused Blackburn to become a psychopath in the novel. This study used the descriptive qualitative method. Describe the characterization of Blackburn in the novel and describe the factor that causes Blackburn to become a psychopath in the Blackburn novel. This thesis uses the theory of New Criticism, character, and characterization because this thesis discusses the characterization of the main character. This thesis also uses Sigmund Freud's Psychoanalytic theory to analyze the factors that Blackburn became a psychopath The results showed that Blackburn described as the cold-blood killer. Because the violence he experienced as a child made him an adult become cold-blood killer. Furthermore, the researcher finds what makes him a cold-blooded killer is the violence he has experienced since childhood and the loss of a mother figure that makes Blackburn as an adult is dominated by an id that makes him cruel
