Abstract

This research aims to examine the plot of a novel titled Natural Predators of Man. This novel tells the story of the Russian troops' determination to carry out their duties despite being isolated in a castle with rough conditions because they encountered monsters and mysterious diseases. These findings are based on the storyline of a group of Russian soldiers who are tenacious in performing their duties as reconnaissance troops during the war of Russia against Germany. This study employs a qualitative approach because it analyzes the novel's plot following the storyline. This research uses Gustav Freytag's theory to examine five elements of a plot: exposition, the emergence of conflict, the peaking of conflict, the decreasing of conflict, and the resolution of conflict. The researcher refers to the texts throughout the novel for the plot analysis. The Russian soldiers' fight began when they found a castle. They were in a cold desert. The extremes of nature can only be overcome by willpower. This army knows how to survive. With clues in hand, Russian Soldiers decided to defend the castle after seeing the cruelty of German soldiers towards children in a castle. The children they protect and defend the castle are their natural enemies. The creature came from the children who ruthlessly killed Russian soldiers. The remaining four Russian soldiers find an escape by swimming to the surface. Then the four Russian soldiers swam ashore. From then on, the soldiers finally escaped the terror. Tragically at the end of the story, they had to swallow the bitter pill for the second time, after their hard struggle in carrying out their duties had to be paid for with their lives taken by their own country. The readers can glean some lessons from this. People can only do their best with all of the hard work they are putting in, hoping for the best. However, all they have is an attempt to go on. They might still be unsure of what it will ultimately become.
