Abstract

This thesis analyzes the language features in male and female students’ writing about COVID-19’s effects on society using Karlsson’s (2007) research findings. This study also discovered the language features in students and the different use of language features between male and female students. There are two objectives of the study to be attained. Those are: (1) To describe the language features that are used by male and female English Department students at UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya in their writing; (2) To describe the differences of the language features that are used by male and female English Department students at UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya in their writing. The researcher applied the qualitative method because she used the students’ writings which are verbal data. The researcher also used the prompts to collect the data. The data were collected by sharing the Google Form, which contains three assignment prompts for random students. The researcher only took 30 students from 34 respondents because she identified that the amounts of male and female respondents were not balanced. So, she took only 15 males and 15 females, which will be balanced in terms of the number of respondents. Then, the researcher sorted, identified, classified, and analyzed the data. The descriptive method was also applied to interpret the data that have been collected and analyzed before. The study found 94 data from males’ writing and 111 data from females’ writing. The researcher analyzed ten language features of Karlsson (2007), but she did not find all of the features. In the males’ writing, the researcher only found six features. Those are hedges, intensifiers, polite language, formal language, taboo words, and commands. Meanwhile, in the females, the researcher found eight features. Those are hedges, intensifiers, polite language, formal language, commands, words that are frequently used by women, tag questions, and minimal response. The intensifiers became the most used features in male and female students’ writing. Considering the differences in the language features used, the females are more implicit in showing their annoyance. However, the males are more explicit about their statements.
