Abstract

Selecting a textbook is crucial for the sustainability of the learning system. This is because the selection of a textbook considers a number of factors that can help the teachers assess a given textbook’s appropriateness for the tasks, materials, and other needs of some aspects. This research intended to explore the teacher’s criteria of supplementary English textbooks that tend to be as their considerations in the selection process and to identify the teacher’s considerations in selecting English textbooks as supplementary books consistent with theories and previous studies. To answer the issue, this research administered a survey questionnaire through Google Form to nineteen English teachers in different Islamic junior high schools scattered in East Java listed in the internship program of the college. The data was analyzed descriptively using SPSS. The finding showed that all the twelve points presented of teacher’s selection of English textbooks as supplementary books were considered by the teachers and the fourteen of teacher’s considerations were divided into four aspects such as program factor, teacher factor, student factor, and also pedagogical factor. Therefore, the result of this study can be useful for English teachers, publishers, and future researchers.
