Abstract

Data on the open unemployment rate for East Java Province show fluctuating developments. There are several relevant variables to determine the causes of fluctuations in the open unemployment rate, including population, labor force participation rate, and minimum wage. The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of population, labor force participation rate and minimum wage on the open unemployment rate in East Java Province in 2011-2020. This research uses a descriptive quantitative research type. The data for this study used secondary data, which were obtained from the Central Bureau of Statistics, the Decree of the Governor of East Java Province, the Central Bureau of Labor Force Survey Statistics and the Executive Report Book on the Condition of the East Java Province Workforce. This study uses panel data regression, so that it can be estimated using three models, namely the Common Effect Model (CEM), Fixed Effect Model (FEM), and Random Effect Model (REM). To get the best model, two tests were carried out, namely the Chow test and the Hausman test. In this study, the best model was found, namely the Fixed Effect Model. The results of the study with the panel data regression analysis model equation are LOGTPTIt = -38.737 + 3.317 LOGJPit – 0.324 LOGTPAK it – 0.252 LOGUMKit + εit. Which proves that partially the population variable has a significant effect on the open unemployment rate, the labor force participation rate variable has no significant effect on the open unemployment rate, and the minimum wage variable has no significant effect on the open unemployment rate. Meanwhile, simultaneously a significant effect of 68 percent between the variables of population, labor force participation rate and minimum wage on the open unemployment rate. The government is expected to be able to reduce the open unemployment rate by paying more attention to the population level which affects open unemployment, the need to reduce the population explosion by holding family planning socialization, the risk of marrying young in all regions is evenly distributed because if the population rate can be reduced then TPT can also be reduced by it can reduce the number of open unemployment in East Java Province.
