Abstract

This study examines the uncovering of Gabriel's death and focuses on the plot of The Silent Patient Novel. The Silent Patient novel is a popular literature with a unique plot. The plot tells about the murder of Gabriel Berenson, conducted by his wife, Alicia Berenson. Alicia has a mental problem. There is no statement from Alicia about the fact of the murder. She remains silent and makes the judge not sentence Alicia to the punishment. At the end of the trial, the judge decides to send Alicia to The Grove, a Forensic psychiatric hospital. However, the way Alicia killed her husband has not yet been revealed. Based on that problem, the researcher is interested in discussing one point of the research problem, (1) how is the mystery of Gabriel's death uncovered in The Silent Patient novel. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method in analyzing the narrative and conversations in The Silent Patient novel. To achieve the research problem, the researcher uses the formula approach by Cawelti. An explanation of the murder case is unrevealed in the story. The analysis begins with a description of the plot of the novel. The analysis is continued with an explanation of the story formulation, starting with the murder of Gabriel Berenson and the attempt the murder Alicia Berenson by using the mystery formula. The research results show how the detectives managed to unravel the mystery of Gabriel's death. The truth was discovered that Gabriel's death was due to the influence of other people. Alicia, the suspect in the murder, is under pressure from a man. That man was Theo Faber. The truth behind Gabriel's murder is that Theo Faber, Alicia's psychotherapist, influenced and brought back Alicia's childhood trauma. Alicia feels unsaved because of Gabriel's betrayal and decides to kill him. The attempted murder of Alicia was carried out by Theo Faber while treating Alicia at The Grove Hospital. However, Alicia knows Theo influenced her the night he killed her husband. Alicia lies to Theo about Gabriel's death. Later, Theo fears his crimes will be exposed, so he decides to silence Alicia with morphine. This case was revealed by the detective, Chief Inspector Steven Allen, through Alicia's diary. Before Alicia fell into a coma caused by an injection of high doses of morphine, she had written down all the facts of the moment before Gabriel diad
