Abstract

Where Eagles Nest is a novel written by Anne Hampson in 1980. The novel tells the story of two people with opposite principles who are reunited by fate. Paul Loukas is an adult man who still adheres to traditional values, restrains and dominates. Meanwhile, Lynn is a modern-minded woman who wants freedom and stands for gender equality. Paul tries to bind and dominate Lynn to stay with him. Utilizing his father's status, he is aggressive and demanding to make Lynn submit to him. For this reason, this research will examine masculinity in the novel, focusing on the research formulation: How does Paul Loukas's characterization in Where Eagles Nest by Anne Hampson represent masculinity? This research used a qualitative descriptive method, which describes the findings. In addition, the data used are literary works of the novel in the form of words, sentences, and conversations in the novel. The researcher used masculinity theory to describe the characterization of the main male character, Paul Loukas, who presents masculinity. This research used Janet Saltzman Chafetz's theory of masculinity. According to Chafetz, masculinity has seven characteristics: Physical, The Function of the Man, Sexual, Emotion, Intellectual, Interpersonal, and Other Character. The study results show that Paul Loukas has all seven characteristics of masculinity proposed by Chafetz. The first is the physical appearance; Paul shows that he has an athletic body strong, tall, and handsome face. Second is the function of the man; Paul is his family's breadwinner. After his father died, Paul took over managing his father's business and became the head of his youngest sister and mother's family before his mother remarried Jake. Paul's eldest sister is already married and has automatically become her husband's responsibility. The analysis results show that Paul is a very wealthy person and can provide for all his family's needs. Third is sexual; the results of the analysis show that Paul is hetero, sexually aggressive, and has a lot of sexual experience with his one-night stand before reuniting with Lynn. Fourth is emotion or man in control of his emotions; in this section, Paul shows that he is a stoic person who holds back his feelings, not wanting to show his emotions (sorrowful feelings) in front of others. Generally, society stereotypes masculine men as tough and not crying. Fifth is Paul is bussinessman; taking over his father's business and managing it to grow shows that Paul is intelligent. Being a leader in the business field requires an innovative, creative, logical brain and broad insight. Sixth is Paul’s personalities; Paul is someone who still adheres to traditional values. For example, he still thinks that men are at the top of the hierarchy; women must obey men. It makes him someone full of dominance and who likes to demand the people around him. Lastly, the other personalities of paul, besides being domineering and demanding, he is also assertive, confident, aggressive and presumptuous.
