Abstract

This study focused on the main character's development using new criticism theory. There are two issues analyzed in this study: (1) How Mateo as the main character is characterized in the novel; (2) How Mateo Torrez's characterization develops in the novel. A descriptive qualitative approach is used in this study. This study uses the descriptive method to analyze the characterization of Mateo Torrez as the main character in the novel. Last, analyze the character development of Mateo Torrez, as the main character in the novel. The result of this study reveals that the novel describes the character of Mateo Torrez is coping with the fear of death after he received a call from Death-Cast company. Mateo Torrez is not a static but a well-developed character from the story's beginning to the end. He is fear of death, anxious, isolated, pessimistic, and denying his fate. Several events in the story, after he meets with Rufus Emeterio, make Mateo Torrez change a lot. From anxious becomes courageous, isolated becomes sociable, pessimistic becomes optimistic, and denying his fate becomes accepting his fate.
