Abstract

This research aims to investigate the strategies of repair employed by Michael Obama during the renowned talk show "Oprah's 2020 Vision Tour Visionaries: Michelle Obama Interview," broadcasted on YouTube. The focus of the study is on the types of Michelle Obama repair that emerged during the interview with Oprah and how she responded to and rectified these errors. The two primary problems of the study are: (1) What are the types of repairs used by Michelle Obama in selected Oprah’s 2020 Vision Tour Visionaries: Michelle Obama Interview? (2) How did Michelle Obama repair their utterances in the talk show selected Oprah’s 2020 Vision Tour Visionaries: Michelle Obama Interview? Adopting a qualitative descriptive approach, data collection involved transcribing talk show conversations available on the YouTube channel. The researcher analyzed the types of repairs and initiation techniques employed to understand Michelle Obama's responses to her errors during the interview. The identified data are then classified to determine the various types of repairs performed by Michelle Obama and how these repairs are initiated. The research findings reveal four types of repairs expressed by Michelle Obama, encompassing 22 utterances that represent diverse repair strategies. Specifically, informal debate participants exhibit 10 instances of self-initiated self-repair, 6 instances of self-initiated other-repair, 5 instances of other-initiated self-repair, and 1 instance of other-initiated other-repair. Furthermore, it was discovered that three dominant patterns of repair occurred during the talk show, namely 12 patterns of abandonment, 11 patterns of replacement, and 7 patterns of modification, while patterns of reorganization were not observed. These findings provide insights into Michelle Obama's active engagement in the conversation repair process, illustrating the communicative dynamics within the context of the talk show.
