Abstract

Education is a deliberate and planned effort to create an appropriate learning atmosphere and learning process so that students actively develop their talents and potential to have religious spiritual strength, personality, self-control, intelligence, noble morals, and the skills needed by themselves and society. Every Muslim has the obligation and demand to be able to read the al-Qur'an. Middle school age students in Indonesia are less interested in reading and studying the al-Qur'an. Focus of this research are (1) To determine students' interest in reading the al-Qur’an at SMP Negeri 16 Surabaya (2) To find out the kinds of social factors that encourage students' interest in reading the Qur'an at SMP Negeri 16 Surabaya. (3) To find out the social factors that dominate students' interest in reading the al-Qur’an at SMP Negeri 16 Surabaya. The research method uses qualitative methods so that data presentation and research results are explained in narrative form. The pattern of this research is descriptive which describes the interest in reading the Koran of students at SMP Negeri 16 Surabaya. Meanwhile, the data collection techniques for this research are observation, interviews and documentation. After the data is obtained, the data is analyzed through several stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of this research are (1) The focus on interest in reading the Qur’an of class 9F students at SMP Negeri 16 Surabaya shows variations in the level of interest, but the majority have high interest. Of the 31 students, 24 of them can read the Qur’an well, while 7 students have a lower level of ability. This conclusion is based on observations, interviews and documentation which shows that this class generally has good ability to read the Qur’an. (2) Social factors have a significant influence on students' interest in reading the Qur’an. Social interaction, especially with peers and teachers, plays an important role in forming interest in reading the Qur’an. (3) The dominant social factor influencing interest in reading the Qur’an in class 9F students is social interaction with peers. Peers are the main motivator, and students tend to be more enthusiastic if invited by friends than if the teacher gives instructions.
