Abstract
This research discusses the funny statement made by Taylor Tomlinson in her first stand-up performance entitled "Quarter Life Crisis" on Netflix. The researcher conducted pragmatic research using the Assertive Speech Act theory to analyze the humor created by Taylor Tomlinson. There are two discussions presented in this research: (1) what types of assertive speech acts are used by Taylor Tomlinson in her stand-up comedy performances? (2) what are the functions of humor that appear in the assertive speech acts delivered by Taylor Tomlinson in her stand-up comedy performance? This study used a descriptive qualitative method. Using this method, the researcher analyzed the speech delivered by Taylor Tomlinson containing the type of assertive speech act. Then, the researcher interpreted the function of humor that appears in utterances that contain assertive speech acts. The data source was taken from the video transcript of Taylor Tomlinson's stand-up comedy performance entitled "Quarter Life Crisis". From the results of this research, there are five of the six types of assertive speech acts, namely Telling which is often used by Taylor Tomlinson. Taylor Tomlinson used the Telling type to share her stories of life through a quarter-life crisis. The researcher also found the function of humor included in assertive speech acts types delivered by Taylor Tomlinson: social management, decommitment, mediation, and defunctionalization. Taylor Tomlinson provides the most common function used is Mediation. Taylor created humor by Telling her life story and building the humorous situation without giving a brief explanation about the situation or feeling at that moment she faced. Taylor uses assertive speech act type and also the function of humor only to make the audience laugh.
