Abstract

This research aims to identify the types of presupposition and racism in the movie Green Book (2018). There are two research questions, namely: (1) What are the types of presuppositions used in the movie Green Book (2018)? (2) What are the types of racism shown through presuppositions in the movie "Green Book". The research data was taken from the transcription of the Green Book movie aimed at the main character. The researcher uses a descriptive qualitative approach to interpret the data. The researcher then analyzed the types of presupposition, and acts of racism against preconceptions of the main character. The analysis used Yule's (1996) presupposition theory to answer the first research question and Bowser's (2017) racism in the second research question. The results of the identification are presented in the form of a table and then analyzed with a detailed explanation and summarized in the conclusion. The research findings show that there are 34 data containing presuppositions which include existential, factual, lexical, structural, and non-factive presuppositions according to Yule's (1996) theory. In addition, this study also identified three types of racism in the movie, namely cultural racism, institutional racism, and individual racism according to Bowser's theory (2017). 12 data were found that showed racist actions, attitudes, and thoughts towards the black race played by the main character in the movie “Green Book”. This study reveals that presupposition in dialogue and situations in the Green Book film can illustrate and reinforce racist behavior, both in cultural, institutional, and individual forms.
