Abstract

The issue of violence against women in Indonesia is both grave and intricate. The KOMNAS PEREMPUAN Annual Report documented a total of 457,895 cases of violence against women in 2022. Surah Annur verse 33 is one of the rules on interpersonal interactions provided by the Quran, the primary source of guidance for Muslims. This rule pertains to the respect of women. This study focuses on the issue of violence against women in Indonesia and explores the Koranic perspective on this matter, as interpreted by Badriyah Fayumi. Through careful examination, we may see how the Quran provides clear directives regarding the protection of women's rights and the prohibition of acts of violence against them. Badriyah Fayumi's analysis of the passages on violence against women in her book "Body, Sexuality and Women's Sovereignty" is the subject of this study, which employs Paul Ricoeur's theory of textual interpretation. Through research that investigates the Qur'anic response to the issue, insights into the implementation of Islamic teachings to combat violence against women in the Indonesian social and cultural context can be realized. This study aims to promote a more profound comprehension of the intersection between religion and gender, which is crucial in tackling the issue of violence against women. The research approach employed in this study is qualitative, first with the formulation of definitions and overarching questions and subsequently proceeding with systematic observation of the broader context. The analysis conducted in this study determined that Badriyah Fayumi interpreted the verses by emphasizing the moral and ethical objectives of the Quran in attaining justice, as well as historical and cultural contextualization. Badriyah Fayumi posits that verses that are frequently perceived as containing elements of violence against women are intended to safeguard the rights of women. The objective of Fayumi is to prevent the use of Quranic texts to justify violence or oppression against women, and she frequently critiques conventional interpretations that demonstrate gender prejudice and unjustly punish women. Her interpretations are general and lack detail, meaning they do not encompass all aspects of Paul Riceour's theory. The distances employed are discourse, historical distance, and linguistic distance.
