Abstract
This research focuses on investigating the word formation and function of English slangs used by non-native English speakers in The Big Sick film. This is a romantic comedy-drama film that portrays the life of Pakistani living in America. The researcher used this film because comedy films often include slang to add a sense of humor. Thus, this research aims to explore how slang can be formed and used. There are two problems of study formulated: 1) What are the types of word formations in slang used by Pakistani Americans in The Big Sick film and 2) What are the functions of slang used by Pakistani Americans in The Big Sick film. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative research method to describe in detail the phenomena being analyzed. In collecting the data, The researcher read the script and matched it with the dialogue in the film. Next, the researcher highlighted and coded the data according to the type of word formation by Yule (2020). After that, the researcher described the word formation process and function of slangs used by Pakistani Americans with the theory of Allan & Burridge (2006). The result of this research found 16 slang that underwent 7 types of word formation processes: 3 data of compounding, 3 data of clipping, 3 data of multiple processes, 2 data of blending, 2 data of conversion, 2 data of coinage, 1 data of derivation. Meanwhile, the researcher found 5 functions of slang used in the film: 7 data to form an intimate atmosphere, 4 data to reveal anger, 3 data to initiate relax conversation, 1 data to address, and 1 data to humiliate. To form an intimate atmosphere was the dominant function of slang used by Pakistani Americans. This indicates that slang tends to be used to form an intimate atmosphere when there is distance between speakers.
