Abstract

This article discusses about the relationship between Islam and democracy in the thought of Jaringan Islam Liberal (JIL) and Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI). The method used for analising the data is critical discourse analysis. The result shows that JIL views Islam is compatible with democracy. Islamic values are compatible with modern democratic values. According to JIL, democracy contains all modern governmental elemens which are also found in Islam, such as consultation, consensus, justice, view difference, freedom, equality and tolerance. While HTI views that Islam is incompatible with democracy. Islamic values are incompatible with democracy because democracy systems from Western culture which is capitalistic and secularistic. These view difference is influenced by theology and ideology that they believe. JIL follows liberal theology and ideology, while HTI follows Islamism theology and ideology.
