Abstract

In recent decades, domestic violence has become a major concern for many people and world organizations. The main reason for this is domestic violence’s grave effect on women and children who make up a large percentage of victims of this crime. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), forty to seventy percent of women in the world have died of domestic violence. For this gruesome statistics, WHO defines violence in the framework of gender. It is a crime committed in the domestic or household sphere, where women and children are the most likely victims. For this reason, the problem of domestic violence must be solved by employing constitutional, legal, economic and cultural approaches. Therefore, domestic violence should no longer be regarded as a household affair or a private matter where outsiders, like legal law enforcement, are not allowed to interfere. There must be greater attention given for this problem and more people involved in finding approaches to prevent it from escalating. This article touchs on the cultural approach existing within the matrilineal Minangkabau to tackle the issue of domestic violence. In Indonesia, domestic violence has also become a subject matter of greatconcern. First, the trend of domestic violence has inflated nationwide. Second, there is a large segment of people, who still regards domestic violence as a private matter. Here, we can put the blame on the patriarchal ideology governing their day-to-day life. Third, in relation to the cultural problem surrounding the issue of domestic violence in Indonesia, there is a deficiency in serious efforts to minimize domestic violence using customary institutions which can be roped in to work in synergy with the authorities. This customary institutions to work under religion and locality perpspective.
