Abstract
The study aimed to examine impoliteness in conversation, and the author conducted a study on impoliteness in the film “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.” The film tells the story of a surgeon who tries to fight a curse that has befallen his family as a result of revenge from someone from the past, and the phenomenon of impoliteness occurs in this film. Therefore, in this study, the author will answer the research questions, namely (1) what types of impoliteness strategies are used by the male main character and his female interlocutor, and (2) the functions of the impoliteness strategies used by the male main character and his female interlocutor in the film ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’. This study uses a qualitative approach to obtain a clear and systematic description of the phenomenon being studied. Descriptive analysis in textual analysis is applied in this study to analyze the main character's conversations in the film script. Data is collected by transcribing the conversations in the film. The transcriptions were then analyzed by identifying the types of impoliteness and applying the appropriate codes to the corresponding text. The analysis continued by identifying the functions of the impoliteness strategies employed by the main male character and his female interlocutor in the film. The results of the study show that all impoliteness strategies were applied in this film. The author found that Steven used all impoliteness strategies, while his female interlocutor only used two of the five impoliteness strategies. Of the five impoliteness strategies available, Steven most frequently used the bald on record impoliteness strategy, while his female interlocutor more often used the negative impoliteness strategy and the sarcasm or mock politeness impoliteness strategy. Steven applied the bald on record impoliteness strategy. Meanwhile, his female interlocutor more often used the negative impoliteness strategy and the sarcasm or false politeness impoliteness strategy. Then, the most frequently found function of impoliteness in Steven's speech was coercive impoliteness, which showed that Steven wanted to assert his power in controlling the situation.
