Abstract

Gender inequality in husband-wife relationship is a crucial issue until now. One of the triggers is the inconsistency of understanding the verse on husband-wife relations, due to the tendency towards legalistic and atomistic approaches. There have been many interpretations using a feminist approach, but some of these interpretations do not reflect the character of Eastern Culture on the one hand. And on the other hand, there is a lack of appreciation of the intellectual treasures of Islam, because of its deconstructive method. This study aims to identify the interrelationships of Eastern feminist interpretations on the issue of husband-wife relations. The Tao of Islam is the object of study. Using a feminist interpretation approach, explanatory analysis method,and Sachiko Murata's reciprocal paradigm as the theory, this study answers how is the construction of Sachiko Murata's feminist interpretation and how is implementation of reciprocal paradigm in Murata’s interpretation on the verse of husband-wife relationship. This study finds, firstly, the construction of Sachiko Murata's feminist interpretation in the methodical aspect consists of the esoteric hermeneutic method and the tawhid paradigm, while the aspects he discusses include theology, cosmology, and Sufistic psychology. Secondly, the implementation of reciprocal paradigm in Murata’s interpretation on verse of husband-wife relationship includes the principles of soul unity, mu'asharat bi al-ma'ruf, pairing and reciprocity. On the other hand, the paradigm of reciprocity is also implemented in an equal position of husband and wife, and the flexibility of rights and obligations as an implication
