Abstract

Beggars become an alternative profession by Pragaan Daya residents who really has several shortcomings such as lack of finance, lack of insight and lack of motivation to do better. These reasons encourage some residents to carry out these activities without shame and carried out in a systematic and organized manner, even though there is no paguyuban that shelters them. From these activities, various social and economic and religious problems emerged. This is due to the activity of begging people will assume that beggars are marginalized people in society, people with weak economic resources and people who damage the image of the Islamic religion which prohibits begging. However, the reality is that there are paradoxes that arise, such as the existence of beggars who are accepted by the community, the average Pragaan Daya residents have fairly strong economic resources and they do not feel that the act of begging has damaged the image of religion. Referring to this phenomenon, it is interesting to study such as (1) the tradition of begging that has taken root (2) the way they interpret the tradition of begging and (3) the implications of begging on the economic conditions in their lives. To answer this question, qualitative research methods will be studied with several approaches such as phenomenology and syariah economics. The informants to be studied were selected based on the Snowball Sampling technique, with insider and outsider sources of informants. To sharpen the analysis used sociological and anthropological theories, namely cultural theory from Clifford Geertz and several economic theories about the meaning of the tradition of begging and the economic implications of begging. These theories serve as the basis and reinforcement in studying the phenomenon of beggars in Pragaan Daya. Some of these theories apart from Clifford Geertz there are other theories such as social theory from Moslow and Islamic economic theory from al-Ghazȃlȋ. The results of the study indicate that the activities of begging for a living carried out by the Pragaan Daya village community have occurred since their ancestors, but there are no written documents related to this history. The roots of the practice of begging have created two kinds of beggars in Pragaan Daya village, namely traditional beggars and modern beggars. The practice of begging that has been carried out for a long time builds different meanings from residents, including (1) as an effort to meet the needs of life, (2) a form of surrender or living destiny and (3) gratitude and happiness. The economic implications of this begging activity for poor beggars are only as a means of fulfilling the necessities of life, while for rich beggars they are able to build businesses and invest, donate to social activities and for the school needs of their next generation. The theoretical implication of this research is as proof that not always the theory of culture can be used as a justification for traditions that are contrary to the general norms of society and are contrary to Islamic teachings. So from the theoretical implications, it strengthens the previous theories that begging is not a good act and should be avoided.
