Abstract
This study used the descriptive research design. This design describes the problems and also the causes of those problems in identifying the genre of texts as the phenomena in teaching English reading skill in Indonesian secondary schools. The setting of the research was SMA PGRI Peterongan Jombang and the subject of this study is 34 students of B class of the second semester at the second grade in that school. The test and questionnaire were used as the instruments of this study. The test was used to obtain the data about the students problems in identifying the genre of English texts. Furthermore, the questionnaire was used to obtain the data about the causes of the students problems in identifying the genre of texts. The majority students made mistake in identifying the purpose of spoof text. The students problems in identifying the parts of generic structure majority happened in narrative text. The majority students had problem in explaining the function of the generic structure of spoof text and many students had problem in understanding the content of hortatory exposition text. Besides, the causes of those problems are lack of understanding about the vocabulary, the generic structure of texts, the information organized in the generic structure and the purpose of texts.
