Abstract
The al Quran is the holy verses were revealed to Prophet Muhammad. using the Arabic language, so to be able to understand the al Quran takes an understanding of Arabic grammar. When the al Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad. yet there is a difference of interpretation of the verses of Quran but when Muslims growing up outside of the Arabs, started going different interpretation of the verses of the al Quran. When some body wants to understand the al Quranthen they began to interpret according to their understanding.
Interpretation in Indonesia is growing, in Indonesia has led some commentators one of which is Hamka and M. Quraish Shihab. Both of these figures has produced a work of commentary book commentary that tafsir al Azhar Hamka opus and the tafsir al Misbah M. Quraish Shihab opus, they often become a reference for students or the general public in understanding the verses of the al Quran.
Hamka and M. Quraish Shihab is a different interpretation of character generation, so that the results of his thoughts sometimes differ, and in their interperting verses of the al-Quran are also sometimes different interpretations, such as the surah al Maidah verse 51, Hamka understand that the surah al Maidah verse 51 explains that people Islam prohibited embraced Jews or the Christians as Auliya, and the word Auliya in Surah al Maidah verse 51 is interpreted as a leader, but M. Quraish Shihab interpret the word Auliya in Surah al Maidah verse 51 with various versions, can be interpreted as a helper, a close friend, advocate or it could be interpreted as a leader, and according to M. Quraish Shihab that the Saints are more appropriately interpreted as a close friend.
In this study, we will compare between Hamka and M. Quraish Shihab by finding the differences and similarities of the two men. Our research measures as follows:First, we will explain about the biography of M. Quraish Shihab and Hamka, from this explanation it can be known the background of their lives and background of his thinking and his teachers. And then we will cite his interpretation of the letter al Maidah verse 51, of the quote then we can compare the results of their interpretation of the surah al Maidah verse 51.
