Abstract
The wide range of developing process of technology in education presents many online learning in the course. One of them in collaborative writing through online tools. The using of collaborative writing through Google Docs, bring the students to engage their selves and use their higher order thinking when they did collaborative writing. The students must think critically to add and continue the coherence sentences between them and their friends. Moreover, this research focuses on identifying cognitive engagement in collaborative writing essay using Google Docs on seventh semester students of English Education Department at UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya in Academic Year 2014-2015 and analyzing the benefits which got by the students in collaborative writing essay using Google Docs. This research uses descriptive qualitative as the method of the research. In addition the researcher uses cognitive engagement rubric and interview guidelines as the techniques to achieve the objectives of this research. The result of this research shows the level of cognitive engagement of students, they are: extremely high engagement, high engagement, moderate, low engagement and extremely low engagement. But, most of the seventh semester students have high engagement in cognitive engagement when they do collaborative writing by using Google Docs. Besides that, the result of the study also shows that there are several benefits that have got by the students in collaborative writing essay, they are: increase students’ responsibility toward the task, promoting the sharing of new information, manage time well, make the sentences become more effective, students can be more motivated to do the task since they do it together and students can do together without meet face to face with their friends. Therefore, the researcher suggests that students should improve their critical thinking in writing through collaborative writing essay by using Google Docs.
