Abstract

The study entitled Using Pictures in Learning Speaking for the First Grade
Students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Taman focuses on two aspects. The first is to
know how the teacher use pictures as media in the students’ process of learning
speaking. The second is to know what the students’ response during learning
speaking using pictures. The study took place in SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Taman
because in this school there are many teachers who have used pictures in learning
English, especially in learning speaking. This study focused on the first grade, so
the research subject is only the teacher who teaches on the first grade, and also the
students on the first grade. This study is important for the teachers who never use
pictures in the students’ process of learning speaking and want to use pictures in
the students’ process of learning speaking. It is also important for the next
researchers in their research and wants to develop pictures in the students’ process
of learning speaking. The study used descriptive qualitative to the research
method. It used interview, questionnaire, and observation to collect the data from
research subjects. The data is analyzed by comparing between the theories stated
in the review of related literature and research finding. The result of the studies
stated that both teacher and students prepared pictures before. The pictures used
by them start on begin of learning process until the learning process end. In the
preparation of the pictures, 76 % of students have enthusiasm to prepare the
pictures by themselves. In the learning process 67 % of them feel happy to
practice in front of their friends� It means that the students always give positive
responses begin from preparation until the learning activity has finished.
