Abstract
In learning English, the students found the problem about the first language (L1) and the second language (L2).Those conditions can cause problem that bring an error as the result of the influences of the students mother tongue or native language. Therefore, it will cause errors in learning the foreign language. Because of that reason, the researcher intends to conduct a study about the students’ errors. This study is conducted error on the constructing compound complex sentences made by fourth semester students of English Teacher Education Department at State Islamic University of Surabaya. By the thesis, there were two problems would be discussed, they are; (1) What are the most common of error made by the fourth semester students English Teacher Education Department of UINSA Surabaya in constructing compound complex sentences? and (2) What are the main causes of errors made by the fourth semester students English Teacher Education Department of UINSA Surabaya in constructing compound complex sentences?. To answer those problems the descriptive qualitative approach was used to obtain the data in- depth, this research used documentation and interview to collect the data. Meanwhile, the sources of the data were the students work in writing argumentative texts. Thus, the errors could be found and soon be analyzed. The result of this research showed that: (1) In some students work, it was found the error occured in different type. In missing subject, the error with 3error or 4.2%; in fused sentence, the error with 26 errors or 37.1%; and in comma splice, with 42 errors or 60%. In other words, the most dominant error was in Comma splice. (2) The error, however, caused by the students rarely open textbook and the teacher that did not explain the material about punctuation, including comma in-depth. So the most frequent cause of the errors are induced error. In conclusion, the students can be considered still face difficulty in constructing compound complex sentences. Therefore, the researcher suggested that the teacher should give more exercise continuosly to students, then discuss it together. Besides, the students also should do more practice in constructing sentences to train their ability in constructing it. Finally, it was expected that the finding of this research will be benefical for both the teacher and further researchers.
