Abstract
By analyzing the language of literary work, especially short story, we may inquire knowledge about the types of illocutionary and perlocutionary acts in the short story that may happen in the real life like the acts of suggesting, asking, asserting, agreement or disagreement, concluding, warning, and praising. Most of them usually happen in human real life, especially in spoken language. The problems of the study are what the types of illocutionary act and what is the perlocutionary act in the dialogues of Hello Magazine's short stories. This study applied a descriptive qualitative research. The purpose of this study is to describe the practical application of language, which is pragmatics, in a short story by analyzing and classifying the types of illocutionary and perlocutionary acts in the dialogues of short story through speech acts theory. The step used to obtain and collect the data is identifying and classifying the types of illocutionary and after that the perlocutionary act. The data is limited only five editions. Dealing with finding and discussion, the illocutionary acts consist of representative, expressive, directive, and commissive. While the perlocutionary act is the effect of the hearer. The last, hopefully the next researcher conduct an analysis of the types and the classification acts more deeply. Beside that the next researcher can analyze why the hearer's response sometimes is not the same with the expected response of the speaker or the relationship between the expected response and implicit meaning in the dialogue. This kind of analysis can also be applied in any other literary work, especially drama or novel.
