Abstract
Addressing is the way how someone to call or refer for others which is as the interlocutor or as the person mentioned in their conversation by their names or some terms. It is included in addressing themselves. Addressing is used to make relationship by people to others. In this case, the writer is interested to do a research towards this addressing, especially the terms of address that exist in Indonesia. The reason why he chooses it because one day he ever reads a comment, from one of the non-Indonesian woman, about a misunderstanding of the use of term “Ibu” which is uttered by a girl, original Indonesian, towards her. According to those, the writer thinks to choose a movie prefer than a novel to make easier in symbolizing the characters’ appearance without imagining how they look like. After that, he puts his decision towards a movie works by Hanung Bramantyo entitled: “Tanda Tanya” which is released in 2011. He chooses this movie because he sees so many terms of address that he can take as his data.
Based on the statement above, the writer does the study of address terms in that movie by conducting two kinds of question about address. The first question is asking about ‘what are kinds of address terms used by the characters in Tanda Tanya movie’. Next, the second question is asking about ‘what factors do influence the use of address terms in that movie’. Therefore, the writer collects the data, for his research, nothing more than are fully taken from the movie that includes of the conversation and utterances which are uttered by characters in there. Almost all of the dialogues are already noted from the movie into texts by the writer to make it easier. Therefore, the writer applies theory of “address system” in conducting this research. The writer uses qualitative approach because the data source is used in the research is in text form and not in numeric form. That is why the writer also applies “content analysis” towards the collected data. The instruments that are used to do the research are the writer himself, some of the writing goods, and his computer to input all of the data.
By the end of the research, the writer classifies some of the terms of address which are included of characters’ utterances from the movie. Afterwards, the writer takes a conclusion there are five kinds of terms of address that appear in the “Tanda Tanya” movie, these are: kinship terms, social titles, endearment terms, names, dan zero address terms. Next, he describes these kinds of the terms of address according to its features. These kinds of terms of address are cannot be used off hand by the addressor. There are several factors make the addressor uses one of the address terms, those are occupational titles, sex, age, race, social status or rank, occupational hierarchy, occupational status, family relationship, and degree of intimacy. Moreover, all of these are directed to the person who is addressed by the addressor as the addressee.
