Abstract

Social entrepreneurship can be an alternative model for empowering waqf assets. Waqf institutions manage waqf assets as social business capital so that waqf institutions earn income to maintain the continuity of social programs. The purpose of research examines implementation of social entrepreneurship, identify its implications and find a model of social entrepreneurship in Waqf Institution DT Bandung. This is a qualitative research with approach a case study. The Snowball model was used as a sampling technique by making the Program and Operational Director of Waqf Institution DT Bandung as the key informant. Data were obtained by participatory observation, in-depth interviews and documentation. Creswell method was used to analyze the data by NVivo 12 Plus Software. The results showed; first, the implementation of social entrepreneurship at Waqf Institution DT begins with efforts to realize social values of providing public infrastructure, programs and easy access. The participation of community in programs creates formation of a harmonious civil society. This is inseparable from innovations in management and programs carried out by DT Waqf Institution in managing waqf assets. The management of waqf assets has an impact on several economic activities within DT Foundation such as asset rental, colaboration, independent business and business opportunities. Second, social entrepreneurship has social and economic implications for institutions and society. For institutions, the social implications are physical and non-physical progress of DT Foundation, while the economic implications are the independence of DT Foundation. For the community, the social implications are positive changes in environment, strong brotherhood and peace of mind, while the economic implications are increasing welfare and affordable prices of necessities. Third, the Collaborative Progressive Model becomes a model for managing waqf assets at DT Waqf Institution. DT Waqf Institution collaborates with internal and external of DT Foundation to optimize the income of waqf assets. DT Waqf Institution distributes the income 50% for mawqūf ‘alayh, 10% for DT Waqf Institution's operations, and 40% for the waqf assets maintenance and reinvestment. The distribution of waqf proceeds aims at the sustainability of waqf assets and independence organization.This research has theoretical implications to the development of social entrepreneurship concept. The social entrepreneurship concept can be applied to business organizations in order to create social value and non-profit organizations in order to create economic value. Waqf institutions as non-profit organizations transformes social business organizations without ignoring their social mission so that it does not depend on community donations.
