Abstract
This study discusses the main character, James, who changed from bad to a better person after meeting Bob. This study aims to explain the personality of James Bowen before meeting Bob, James’ personality development after meeting Bob, and also to reveal how the influence of Bob on James's personality development. In conducting this research, the researcher uses New criticism as the theory to analyze James’s characterization and Personality development theory uses to analyzed James’s Personality development. This study uses a qualitative method to analyze the novel and A Street Cat Named Bob by James Bowen as the primary data source. The researcher collects the data through quotes in the novel that uses to explain what the main character goes through until he becomes a better person. The results obtained from this study, the personality of James Bowen before he meets Bob is: disobedient, apathetic, impressionable, pessimistic, and shy. After meeting Bob, James’s personality development is obedient, helpful and responsible, optimistic, and sociable. The factor that influences James’s personality development is Bob the cat which is a strong motivation for James.
