Abstract

This research presents a translation shift analysis in the translation of Edgar Allan Poe's short stories and translated version by Anton Kurnia. The researcher only focuses on the category shift which is contained in the translation by Anton Kurnia. There are two problems of study to be answered in this study. First is about the kinds of shifts that occur in the translation of Edgar Allan Poe's short stories. The second is about the factors that cause shifts in the translation of short stories by Edgar Allan Poe. The researcher used the descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data of this research. The data was collected from a collection of short stories by Edgar Allan Poe and their translations from a book entitled "Kucing Hitam" translated by Anton Kurnia. Then, the researcher identified the data selected and classified them into the types of category shifts. This research found four types of category shifts that appear in the translation of Edgar Allan Poe's short stories. The shifts that occur in the translation of the short stories are first, structure shift, second, class shift, third, unit shift (downward rank shift and upward rank shift), fourth, intra-system shift. Whereas, the factors that cause a shift in translation from the source language to the target language in short stories are due to differences in the characteristics of the source language and the target language. According to Larson, there are three characteristics of language that can affect translation, the first is a single meaning that can be expressed in various forms, the second is that the same meaning component will occur in several lexical items of surface structure, and the third is one form will be used to represent several alternative meanings. In this study, these three factors were found in Edgar Allan Poe's short story.
