Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of conflicts that Cooper Clay, one of the main characters in One of Us is Lying novel, faces. This research also focuses on how Cooper Clay deals with the conflicts. The researcher poses two research questions in this thesis: 1) how are conflicts in Cooper Clay’s life as a high school teenager depicted in One of Us is Lying novel? And 2) how Cooper Clay deals with the conflicts in the novel? In this study, the researcher used a qualitative descriptive method. The researcher used the theory of conflict by Lynch-Brown and Nurgiyantoro to describe the types of conflicts. Meanwhile, the theory of problem-solving by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry helps to elaborate on how Cooper Clay deals with his problems. The results showed that the conflict emerged in Cooper's life as an inner conflict, such as the sense of doubt and fear he experienced for hiding his actual identity as a gay high school student. In addition, Cooper Clay is involved in external conflicts with several of his friends, investigators, and father. It may have happened because of the lies he had committed to maintain his good image during this time and his career as a good student at school and a baseball athlete. Meanwhile, in dealing with conflicts, Cooper does not always directly solve them. He tends to procrastinate, feel reluctant to fix the problems, and even run away from problems. However, in the end, he solved all the problems and took the risk of his actions.
