Abstract

This study observes the use of impoliteness strategies by the main characters in Teenage Bounty Hunters. Teenage Bounty Hunters is a teen comedy-crime series that tells the life of Sterling and Blair Wesley in balancing school life and being bounty hunters. This study has two research problems: (1) What impoliteness strategies are implemented by the main characters in the Teenage Bounty Hunters TV series? (2) What are the functions of implementing impoliteness strategies by the main characters in the Teenage Bounty Hunters TV series? This study uses Culpeper's theory (2005) to observe the impoliteness strategies uttered by the main characters in the TV series. In addition, this study also analyzes impoliteness functions with the theory of Culpeper (2011). This study used a descriptive qualitative method to identify, classify, and analyze the main characters' utterances which indicate impoliteness strategies and functions in the Teenage Bounty Hunters TV series. First, the researcher identified impoliteness strategies and functions using the initial code. Second, the researcher classified and analyzed the data to specify impoliteness strategies and functions spoken by Sterling and Blair. In this thesis, four types of impoliteness strategies are found: the bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, and mock politeness. The researcher found 106 data indicating the use of impoliteness strategies by the main characters. The main characters primarily use bald-on-record impoliteness since they prefer to attack other people's faces clearly and concisely. The researcher found 53 data of bald on record impoliteness uttered by the main characters. The researchers also found 22 data of negative impoliteness, 17 of positive impoliteness, and 14 of mock politeness. The main characters used impoliteness strategies to show their anger towards their interlocutors. The researcher found 51 data of affective function. A coercive function with 42 data followed this, and an entertaining function with 13 data. In this case, the affective function is mainly used by the main characters in the Teenage Bounty Hunters TV series.
